Historically, the birth of the Christmas cracker came about in 1847 when an English confectioner Thomas Smith holidayed in France with his family and discovered the bon bon. The paper wrapped sweet was all the rage in France so Smith took the idea back to England releasing it just before Christmas, their busiest time.
It was an instant hit but Smith had competitors and each Christmas he released his bon bons with new features to stay ahead like a double wrapping with love mottos, then the following year an additional trinket, marketing them all as "Christmas Bonbonnes". After kicking a smouldering log from the fire, Smith was taken with the idea of a bang being somehow introduced to his bon bons. It took two years of development and brunt fingers but in 1860 he introduced the world to "Bangs of Expectations" the first Christmas cracker that pulled apart and banged.
From there the crackers became bigger, the paper more fancy and the rest as they say, is history.
